Mackworth Island in Falmouth is a 100-acre island that offers its visitors some of the most scenic views of Casco Bay. Visitors may obtain a guidebook from park authorities to help them better appreciate the island’s cultural and natural history. Hunting and trapping are also allowed throughout the island, but must follow state rules and regulations.
Gilsland Farm is a 65-acre wildlife sanctuary and environmental education center, also located within the town of Falmouth. This gorgeous preserved area is owned and managed by the Maine Audubon Society and consists of meadows, woods and salt marshes along the banks of the Presumpscot River Estuary. More than two miles of meandering trails provide ideal conditions for nature study, walking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing in the winter. Various educational programs are also hosted throughout the year. The recently added Environmental Center Building is a 500 square- foot visitor center housing the Children’s Discovery Room, a teacher’s resource center, nature store and natural history exhibits and information. Residents of both Falmouth and Gorham also have access to nearby Maine Historical Society and Museum located just minutes away in Portland. This museum serves as the foundation for the Maine Historical Society exhibition program and remains an excellent and essential resource for students and scholars involved in researching Maine material culture. The museum has an approximate collection of 10,000 artifacts including paintings, prints and other original artwork, costumes, textiles, decorative arts, Native American artifacts and archaeological materials, toys, tools, glass, ceramics, political memorabilia and military artifacts reflecting upon the lifestyle of Maine residents. |
